Kevin an’ Lance trudged through the twilight mist, their feet draggin' wi’ the weight o' their quest. They’d faced beasts, sirens, an' spirits o' wind, but now stood before the final challenge: the Faerie Queen’s lair. Deep in the enchanted wood, the air buzzed wi’ the tension o’ time itself, stretchin’ and twistin’ as if waitin' tae snap.
The wizard, auld McInnis MacBagginis, had sent them on this mad venture tae gather the seven sacred herbs, promising them the “Power o' the Ancients” once they succeeded. "Ye’ll be invincible, lads, once ye’ve the seven herbs,” he’d promised. "But beware—time itself will test ye."
Now, wi’ six herbs in their sack an' only the Sioban Cap mushrooms left, they faced Tchar-lach Fee-ah-dahch Queen o' the Faeries, keeper o' time, an' ruler o' the labyrinth. The mushrooms glowed faintly on her crown, like the rings o' Saturn made o’ pure magic.
"Welcome, mortals," Nye-yuchk purred, her voice the slow tick-tock o' an eternal clock. "Ye seek the Sioban Caps, aye? But before ye enter my labyrinth, partake o' my ritual. A tea brewed wi' the mushrooms ye crave—fer those who wish tae challenge time."
She held out a silver goblet, steamin’ wi’ Sioban Cap tea. Kevin, always the reckless one, grabbed it first, slurpin’ it back as if it were a pint at the pub.
“Ye madman!” Lance hissed, but he took his own drink after a hesitant sniff, nae wantin’ tae show fear.
The tea slid doon their throats, an' fer a moment, everythin' froze—time stopped, leavin’ them weightless, suspended between seconds. Then the world jerked back intae motion, an' the labyrinth’s doors creaked open, invitin' them tae their doom.
“The rules are simple,” she replied wi' a smirk. "If ye survive my labyrinth, ye’ll have the mushrooms ye need. Fail... an' ye’ll be swallowed by time itsel’. Good luck, lads."
Without another word, the Queen vanished, her laughter echoing as Kevin an' Lance stepped intae the labyrinth.
From the first step, everythin’ was chaos—walls o' shimmering mist, staircases goin’ nowhere, an' time whirlin' like a wild wind around them. Seconds stretched into years, then snapped back intae moments. Lance stumbled, feelin' decades older, while Kevin charged ahead, oblivious tae the shiftin’ ages around him.
“Och, this is shite, Lance!” Kevin yelled. “Where’s the bloody exit?”
But Lance, fer once, had his wits about him. He clutched the Raven Talisman, feelin' its cold weight in his hand. The spectral bird appeared, guidin’ them through the corridors, flappin' its wings as it dodged traps o' time.
"That bird knows somethin’ we don’t," Lance muttered, followin' close behind. “But we’ll owe it, mark my words.”
The first trial struck soon enough. The air grew heavy, slowin’ them tae a crawl as the Faerie Queen’s voice echoed again. “Patience, or perish. Time rewards those who wait.”
Kevin, as ye might expect, lost his rag straight away. “I’m nae waitin’! We’ve got tae move!” He stomped ahead, but every step only aged him more, lines etchin' across his face.
Lance, on the other hand, sank tae the floor, realizin' what the Queen meant. “It’s a trick, Kevin! Time’s a bastard, but if ye fight it, it’ll tear ye apart.”
Only when Kevin finally stopped fightin' did the labyrinth shift again, the walls openin’ tae a new path. The Fox Talisman glowed faintly in his pocket, a reminder that the cleverest path wasnae always the fastest.
Deeper they went, each step more perilous than the last. Time jumped between centuries—one moment they stood in ancient stone halls, the next a future o’ gleamin’ metal stretched before them. Each twist in the labyrinth was another mind-bendin' trap. Lance, fearin' they'd be stuck forever, used the Raven’s last gift, guidin’ them past an impossible knot o' time that would’ve had them lost fer centuries.
But they knew what was comin'. The Queen herself waited at the heart, the Sioban Caps perched atop her gleamin' head like the spoils o' war.
“Ye made it,” she said, her voice slow an’ ominous. “But the final trial remains. Can ye outwit time itsel’?”
Without warnin', she snapped her fingers. Kevin an’ Lance felt their bodies changin'—growing older, bones creakin’, hair turnin’ grey.
“Shite! She’s aged us!” Kevin howled, clutchin' his chest like his heart might give oot.
Lance, thinkin' fast fer once, grabbed the Fox Talisman. “We cannae beat time, but we can outsmart it.”
The Fox spirit flared tae life, twisting the labyrinth around them, weavin' a path o’ escape. Time slowed, then reversed, the years meltin' off their faces as they darted past the Queen, grabbin’ the Sioban Caps. The Faerie Queen’s laughter turned dark as they fled, her voice echoing: “Ye may’ve escaped, but ye owe more than ye ken. Time always collects its debts.”
When they stumbled back tae McInnis MacBagginis’ hut, dirty an’ exhausted, they threw the bag o' herbs at his feet. "There’s yer bloody mushrooms," Kevin spat. "We’ve got all seven. Now gie us the power o' the ancients, like ye promised!"
The wizard looked at them, his eyes twinklin’ with amusement. “Oh, ye daft bastards. Ye think power comes in the form o’ some grand spell? Some mighty force ye can wield?”
Kevin’s face dropped. “Aye, that’s what ye bloody said.”
“Nae, ye’ve misunderstood,” McInnis chuckled. “The true power o' the ancients isnae somethin’ ye can hold. It’s what ye’ve learned along the way. Ye faced fire, tricked faeries, outwitted time itsel’. Ye’ve grown stronger, wiser. That’s yer power now. That’s what the ancients knew—survival, cleverness, and endurance. The challenges made ye capable. Ye’re nae the fools ye were when ye started.”
Lance, slack-jawed, blinked. “So… there’s nae magic? No superpower?”
“Nothin’ ye can see,” the wizard shrugged. “But think on it. Ye beat the Faerie Queen, ye outlasted the trials o’ time. Nae many could say that. Ye’ve gained wisdom, even if it came wi’ a few more grey hairs.”
Kevin stared at him, rage bubblin’ up. “So we went through hell, an’ what we get is bloody wisdom? Ye old bastard!”
But deep down, they knew the truth. They were different—smarter, tougher. The quest had changed them, even if the twae eejits still had the brains o’ a gnat.
They’d survived trials nae one else could’ve faced, but just as they were startin' tae feel proud o' themselves, a cold breeze rustled through the trees.
“Aw, what now?” Kevin muttered, lookin’ around like a nervous hen.
Suddenly, the Raven appeared, swoopin’ doon in front o’ Lance, its black feathers shimmerin' like midnight stars. Its eyes gleamed wi’ that same knowing look it had carried in the labyrinth. From the other side, the Fox slipped out o’ the shadows, all sly grins an' sharp eyes, circlin' around Kevin like it was about tae pounce.
“Oh, great! What dae they want now?” Kevin groaned, rememberin’ the price they’d been warned about.
The Raven perched on Lance’s shoulder, its dark voice echoing in his mind. "The time has come to collect, mortal. Ye owe me a debt, an’ debts must be paid."
The Fox grinned up at Kevin, barin' its sharp wee teeth. "Aye, an’ ye dinnae think ye’d outwit me an' walk free, did ye? The Fox always gets its due."
Kevin threw his hands up, already fed up wi' the whole magical shite they’d been dealin’ wi’ fer days. “Och, just take whatever ye want! What is it this time? Years off our lives? Our firstborn? Fer the love o'—”
But the Raven interrupted, its wings flappin’ like the finality o’ a tolling bell. "Nae, we dinnae want yer life. What we want... is tae team up."
Kevin blinked, caught off guard fer once. “Wait... what?”
Lance, wi' the Raven still perched on his shoulder, frowned. “Aye, what dae ye mean, ‘team up’? We’re done wi’ all that questin’ bollocks.”
The Fox chuckled, its voice slippin' intae Kevin’s ear like a sly whisper. "Oh, ye think yer done? No, lads, this was only the beginning. Ye’ve passed our tests, an’ now we join ye. From here on, I’ll be yer familiar, Kevin—guidin’ ye out o' the chaos ye cause, an’ stirrin’ a bit more when it suits me."
The Raven ruffled its feathers, noddin’ solemnly. "An' I’ll stay by yer side, Lance. Wisdom, wit, an' the keen sight tae spot trouble before it comes. Ye’ve earned my loyalty, but ken this—there’ll always be a price. We’ve tied our fates together now."
Kevin, nae quite comprehending, scratched his baldy heid. “So... let me get this straight. Ye’re sayin’ we dinnae owe ye nothin’, but ye’ll stick wi’ us fer... ever?”
The Fox snickered, circlin' Kevin's legs. "Forever’s a long time, lad, but aye, we’re yer familiars now. We’ll help ye, challenge ye, and maybe even save yer arse a time or two."
Lance, ever the thinker—when he bothered tae think—looked at the Raven. “So what, ye’ll just follow us roond? Like a pet?”
The Raven’s beady eyes glinted. "Nae like a pet, ye daftie. More like a partner. I’ll be yer guide, yer wit when ye need it most. An' ye’ll need it, trust me."
Kevin, still confused but slightly chuffed at the thought o’ havin’ a clever fox by his side, crossed his arms. “Right, well... I guess that’s no’ so bad. Could be worse, eh, Lance?”
Lance, tryin’ tae look serious, nodded slowly. “Aye... but ye ken they’re up tae somethin'. Familiars never dae anythin’ fer free.”
The Fox chuckled darkly. "Oh, ye’ll find out in time, Kevin. Ye’ll find out."
An' so, wi’ their new familiars in tow, Kevin an’ Lance trudged back tae their quiet wee village, nae quite realizin’ the madness that awaited them. The Raven watched from Lance’s shoulder, eyes flickerin' wi’ foresight, while the Fox trotted alongside Kevin, its tail swishin' as if it was already plottin’ the next bit o’ chaos they’d stumble intae.
Sure, they’d survived the Faerie Queen, outwitted time, an' gathered the sacred herbs, but if they thought that was the end o’ their adventures, they were bigger fools than anyone could’ve guessed. Wi' a mischievous fox an' a clever raven by their sides, trouble would follow them like a shadow.
An’ tae be honest, Kevin was already thinkin' aboot how much fun it’d be tae stir up some new mayhem wi' a fox at his side. Lance, meanwhile, just hoped the Raven’d keep him out o' too much trouble... but deep doon, he knew that was a lost cause.
An’ so, their adventures continued, no’ as just two eejits on a quest, but as two eejits wi’ the trickiest, sharpest familiars this side o’ the faerie realm.
Aye, they’d survived. They’d gained the power o’ the ancients—but it came at a cost. An’ the biggest lesson o' all? Sometimes the prize isnae what ye expect.
